I have been teaching middle school math and science for the past 8 years and have loved every minute of it. I live for those light bulb moments when a concept finally clicks for a student. Those moments of transformation, from frustration to elation, when all of their effort finally coalesces in understanding are incredible to be a part of.
Math is unique in that most students enter school with a preconceived love or loathe of math. Every student is different in how they learn or retain math skills and typically decide very early on if they are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ at math. It is my goal to meet each of my students where they are at and encourage achievable goals. When nurtured in this way, I believe students’ perceptions about math can change. Every student should feel success around math. Once they have felt it, they usually want to chase that win again and again.
I believe that the current standards and the way that content, and math in particular, is being taught is completely broken. The creators of the Common Core had great intentions, but our students need to learn how to problem solve, not how to invert trigonometric functions.
